A bit of history - The Quilombola Community of Monte Alegre

The Quilombola Community of Monte Alegre is a place steeped in history and culture, reminiscent of Brazil's colonial past. Here, Africans who fled slavery found refuge and established a resilient community that still works to preserve its identity and surroundings. Agriculture is the main source of local income, and residents are deeply attached to the land they respectfully cultivate.

The regular capoeira classes are a perfect example of how the community keeps its tradition alive by uniting young people in activities that celebrate their roots. In addition, residents are actively involved in social causes that support not only the quilombo but also the entire island.

The carnival

Among the most heartfelt events is the simple and authentic carnival, featuring groups from the village areas, the BLOCOs, who dance and sing traditional music while parading in traditional costumes. The costume parade passes through the streets, offering a unique and lively spectacle that reflects the soul of the community.

Feast of Iemanjá

In addition to the famous Carnival, another not-to-be-missed event is the Feast of Iemanjá, held annually on February 2. During this fascinating celebration, a maritime procession of saveiro and boats carries flowers and gifts for Iemanjá, the deity of the sea. Considered the creative mother, Iemanjá welcomes everyone with open arms, offering a moment of deep spiritual and cultural connection. A unique experience to be had to fully understand the tradition and magic of Boipeba.
